Thank you to everyone who visited the Animal Expo!  Students had worked very hard on their research and their presentation.  They were very excited to share with an audience!

As we begin to close out the school year, please take a look around the house for any books that belong to school.  You might find Broadway library books, Broadway Book Room books, or classroom books.  All books found and returned are greatly appreciated!

Students will begin bringing home school work and supplies Tuesday and Wednesday of next week.  If you could help your child empty his/her backpack in preparation for this it would be helpful.  You wouldn't believe some of the things kids are carting around in their backpacks!

4th quarter report cards will be mailed home.  If you have had a change of address, please be sure your file has been updated with the office so that this important paperwork can get to you.

May 19th- Last Day of School Extravaganza- Please join us the afternoon of April 19th for a school-wide family picnic and a variety of fun activities.  There will be lots of different activities available for students to participate in including a variety of bump-n-jumps.  A note about the picnic came home last week.  If you'd like to join your child for lunch, please complete this form and return it to school so that the kitchen can order and prepare enough lunches.

A1 is a pretty exciting room this week!  We are hard at work trying to determine what is wrong with our aquariums and why so many of our fish are dying.  We've also been trying to catch our millipedes when they are above the soil and eating, but we're beginning to realize that these creatures really and truly love the dark- they don't come out much!

Our big work for this week will be to finish preparing for student-led conferences.  Students have gathered samples they want to share with you and they've been thinking about how they have grown in each of the core subject areas.  They are excited to share with you on Thursday!

Thanks for everyone who attended and/or helped with the Art Show, Silent Auction, and Chili Dinner!  We had a great crowd and it was fun to see all of the different art work created by students throughout the year.

Here are upcoming dates that I know of:

April 28th- Student-led Conferences:  Your student should have brought a form home last week telling your specific conference time.  If you did not receive this note or the time does not work for you, please let me know as soon as possible so that we can try to reschedule your student's conference. No school for students on this date.

April 29th- Teacher Work Day, no school for students.

May 2nd- Field Trip to the Fruita Children's Nature Center and Fruita State Park.  This field trip supports our work with organisms and their habitats.  Please be sure your child has a sack lunch (unless you checked the box on the permission form that asks the school cafeteria to provide a lunch for your child), comfortable walking shoes, and appropriate clothing for the day's weather.

May 5th- Field Trip- We will be traveling to Stocker Stadium to cheer for the Special Olympics athletes!  We will be supporting a student from our class as well as two other Broadway students.  Please be sure your child has a sack lunch (unless you checked the box on the permission form that asks the school cafeteria to provide a lunch for your child) and appropriate clothing for the day's weather.

May 12th- Second Grade Animal Expo- Please join us in our classroom from 1-2pm for our animal expo!  Each student is in the process of becoming an expert about a specific animal and its habitat.  Join us on the 12th to learn more about these animals and to see the projects student shave created to share their learning.

May 19th- Last Day of School Extravaganza- Please join us the afternoon of April 19th for a school-wide family picnic and a variety of fun activities.  There will be lots of different activities available for students to participate in including a variety of bump-n-jumps.  A note about the picnic came home earlier this week.  If you'd like to join your child for lunch, please complete this form and return it to school so that the kitchen can order and prepare enough lunches.

Whew... still tons going on!  Please take note of a change in the field trip plans.  Last week I mistakenly said we were headed to the Fruita Children's Nature Center and Fruita State Park on May 5th.  We are actually headed to Fruita on May 2nd and Special Olympics on May 5th.  I apologize for the error!  Permission forms for this trip came home earlier this week.  If they didn't make it to you, please let me know so I can get new forms to you.

Our class won the Pizza Party for most money raised for the Broadway Bear Walk!  We'll be enjoying our pizza on Tuesday, April 19th.  No need for a lunch that day!

We're excited about showing you some of the art work we have done this year at next week's art show so we hope to see you there.  More information about the art show can be found in the link in last week's post.  Also, we're still collecting items for the basket we'll donate to the silent auction.  Our theme is sports.

We're in the process of scheduling student-led conferences and hope to have the final conference times to you by Wednesday of next week.  Please remember that your child is leading this conference so plan on them being with you!

The calendar may say the school year is winding down, but that sure isn't the case in our classroom!  We are just beginning our last unit of study, organisms and their habitats.  This is an integrated unit- most of our reading, writing, and science time will be connected to this study.  We set up our aquariums and terrariums yesterday and today we will begin observing our organisms and adding them to their habitats.  There's just a bit of excitement in our room!  Please check our the reading, writing, science, and math links for more information about the work we will be doing.

There's lots going on in the next few weeks, so here's the dates I know about at this time:

April 7th- Class Pictures
April 21st- Art Show, Silent Auction, and Chili Dinner (click on the link for more information)
April 28th- Student-led Conferences (no school for students)
April 29th- Teacher Work Day (no school for students)

Dear Families,
I can't believe we only have two weeks until Winter Break!  Even though there aren't many days, there are tons of things happening.  Here's what I know about at this point.

Holiday Shop- PTO is sponsoring a Holiday Shop this year.  The Shop will be open this week (December 7th).  Students will have an opportunity to browse at the shop on Tuesday and then do their actual shopping on Thursday.  The hope is that the Holiday Shop provides a place where students can Christmas shop for friends and families. The Holiday Shop will also be open the evening of December 10th.

Cookies, Hot Chocolate, and Caroling- PTO will also be hosting Broadway's Second Annual Cookies, Hot Chocolate, and Caroling party on Thursday, December 10th from 5:30-7:00.  Pizza will be available to purchase; cookies and hot chocolate will be free.  PTO is looking for donations of baked goods. This is a fun event, hope to see you there!

Field Trip to Wells Fargo- The second graders will be walking down to Wells Fargo on Wednesday, December 16th.  They will be learning about the different types of services banks provide.  They'll also get a chance to see the vault and other areas of the bank.  Please sign and return your child's permission form if you have not already done so.

Class Christmas Party- Information about our class Christmas party was sent home with your child on Friday.  However, I know that sometimes the info may not get from school to home, so I am attaching the letter here as well (Christmas letter).  We'll be looking for family members to help with cooking, serving, and crafts.  Janille Hudson, our class room parent, may be contacting you to see if you are available.  Thanks in advance for your help, and, as always, families are welcome to join us for any portion of the day's festivities.

Winter Break-Winter Break will be December 21st-January 4th.  There is no school for students on Monday, January 4th.  This is a work day for teachers to finalize second quarter report cards.  Students return to school on Tuesday, January 5th.

Families,
Boy, there are always lots of things going on!  Here's a quick hit of the things I know about that are coming up.

Music Program- The second grade music program is this Monday, at 6:00.  Mr. Brenholtz would like students to be at school by 5:40 (kids are coming to our classroom).  They are welcome to wear their Halloween costumes if they’d like.  Can’t wait to see you all there!

Elementary Planning Day- Friday, November 6th is an elementary planning day.  There is no school for students on this day.

Growth Mindset Workshop for Parents- At conferences, we talked briefly about the work Broadway is doing with growth mindset and Habits of Mind.  Growth mindset is incredibly powerful for students and we can’t wait to share some of what we’re learning with you!  Please join us on November 10th to learn more about this work!

Field Trip to the Math and Science Center- The second grade classes will be traveling to the Math and Science Center on Wednesday, November 18th.  Staff at the center will lead us in a hands-on exploration of forces and motion and we'll also be able to explore the Center.  We'll be leaving right around 9:00 and getting back to school just before 12:00.  Please note that we have traded lunch times with fourth grade for this day as we won't be back in time for our regularly scheduled lunch.  Students will have lunch from 12:00-12:40 on this day.  Permission forms will be coming home on Monday, October 26th.  We'd love to have two parent volunteers join us for this trip so if you're interested, please let me know.

Thanksgiving Lunch- Broadway's Annual Thanksgiving Lunch will be held on Thursday, November 19th.  Reservation forms came home last week.  If you would like to join your student for lunch on this day, please complete the reservation form and send it back to school so that the kitchen know how many lunches to make.

Thanksgiving Break- Thanksgiving Break will be November 23rd-27th.
